First Unity Park engraved bricks ready for placement

South Fulton Parks Director David McDaniel reported this year’s Trunk or Treat event held at South Fulton’s Unity Park Oct. 27 was a success, with canned goods collected used to stock two “blessing boxes” located in the area of P & R Tire and the South Fulton Municipal Complex.

McDaniel noted a smaller amount of canned goods and non-perishable food items was received than anticipated, however he said that in the future, more publicity would be used to give those in attendance the opportunity to bring food items with them to the Trunk or Treat event for a donation.

Glenn Snow and Don Robertson were in attendance for the meeting, along with Parks and Rec board members Felicia Lightner, Myra Bass, Anita Oliver and Eddie Cassetty.

Snow and Robertson will return to the next regular session of the board regarding their ideas about a possible Veterans monument in Unity Park, coordinated with assistance fro the American Legion Post #72.

McDaniel updated board members about the engraved brick fundraiser, noting he was to pick up the first 17 engraved bricks purchased by area residents. Bricks may be purchased for $40 each or three for $100, which will then be used to create an area in Unity Park showcasing the bicks.

He also said he planned to begin decorating the areas of Unity Park and South Fulton Municipal Complex for the Christmas season, and hoped by next year to add electrical hookups to offer locations in Unity Park for the four foot by eight foot community Christmas Cards now displayed along Lake Street and Pontotoc Park in Fulton.

While no specific Christmas event is set for Unity Park this year, as board members agreed attendance has been low for any outdoor event during the Christmas season, the board considered the possibility of hosting a time on some Saturdays prior to Christmas when “Santa” could visit with children in the park. No official action was taken.

While only in the early research stage, McDaniel told the board he is looking into the idea of constructing a splash pad in Unity Park, and also seeking out available grant funding for such a project.

The board will not meeting in regular session in December or January with the next regular meeting date set for Feb. 5, 2019.

Board members Billy Williams and Harry Hutcherson were absent from the meeting.
