One will not have to look hard to realize the Fulton County Lady Pilots will be facing a challenge on the court this season.

Coming off an 11-18 season last year, coach Leonard Smith will begin the season will only eight players on the bench.

With no juniors or freshmen on the roster, Coach Smith will count on five seniors and three sophomores to guide the Lady Pilots team this year.

“We know it’s going to be tough, but I think we will be okay,” said coach Smith about his group of players. “My advantage is that I have five seniors who have plenty of playing time and experience, and we will use that to our advantage. The girl’s are not looking at this in any other way. They are ready to go out and play hard and win some games.”

Returning to the Lady Pilots for their final season is Delaynee Cermak, Savanna Roberts, Karlie Williams and Alaya Barnett, who are joined with Jamya Pierce, Callie Coulson and Brookelyn Chambers.

Cermak and Roberts have been recognized for their play with Fulton County, with both recently signing college scholarships to continue their playing careers.

Cermak will continue her education and basketball at Brescia University in Owensboro, while Roberts will be part of the first ever Lady Stars basketball team at West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah.

Coach Smith was asked if the lack of bench depth would affect the way he coaches and plays this season.

“We plan to just play basketball. We will play the way we have in the past, and use our experience to offset our numbers. My girl’s are basketball smart, and we know we will have to make good decisions on the floor. We don’t need silly fouls , but we will play aggressive to our advantage. I have said that I think we will be okay, so we will just season as the season starts.”

The Lady Pilots had a (3-3) district record last year, and failed to advance to the First Region tournament following an opening round loss in the district tournament.

But, coach Smith said it was a goal to get his five seniors back to the tournament to end their careers.

“We want to get to the region. We didn’t get it done last year, but we will work and play hard to make sure these girl’s play at Murray State. I feel good about our chances in the district. We have the experience and the talent. That is what it takes to be successful.”

The Lady Pilots will begin their season on the road in South Fulton Nov. 29.
