January 03, 2019

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry has temporarily halted service as a result of floodwaters on the Mississippi River. According to a release issued by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District One and Two Public Information Officer, the closure is expected to last up to eight days, or longer.

According to Ferry Captain Jeremy Newson, the ferry normally halts operation when he Cairo Gauge goes above 40 feet, however the ferry did manage to operate until the Cairo reading reached 46.02 feet at 6 p.m. Jan. 2. The river forecast at Cairo indicates a crest at 49 feet on Jan. 7, with a slow fall to 46.2 feet midday Jan. 11.
