Fulton County Elementary shares Glows and Grows for 2018-2019

Members of the Fulton County Board of Education met in a Special Called Meeting on Feb. 19, in the Fulton County Elementary School Library.

Board members Rob Garrigan, Jacob Goodman, Kim Hagler, and Perry Turner, and Superintendent Aaron Collins were present. Board member Barry Patrick was absent.

Students at Fulton County Elementary School who have improved their Reading skills drastically were honored in the Pilot Spotlight for February. Students were screened at the beginning and end of the year to be eligible for the Reading class.

The Board presented certificates to Jac Cline, Kara Schmidt, McKenzie Russom, Rylan Kohagen, Mary Reese Williams, Kinley Ellingburg, Campbell Lyons, Brayden Burkeen, Waylon Brunswick, Tyler Jackson, Maddox Amberg, Xander Cline, Jadyn Hatcher, Lee Uzzle, Caylea Bixler, Schaeffer Sipes, Presley Eakes, Roger Stephenson, Miriam Varden, and Zoie Somerfield.

Faculty and staff commented, “Comes to assist at the drop of a hat,” “Truly and advocate for students,” “Knowledge and professionalism is excellent,” “Fortunate to have her services for our district,” “Makes students feel better,” “She is able to quickly assess a student’s health,” “Treats minor ailments and have students return to class quickly,” “Notify the parents,” “She is an excellent nurse.”

The Best Pilot on Board for February is Natasha Fields.

Superintendent Collins, “I want to thank the Board for their years of support for the nursing services at our school district. The Board has realized the services are needed for our children and very important.”

Fulton County Elementary School Principal Sondra Gibbs presented the Glows and Grows for 2018-2019’s Fantastic Voyage chose “Learning is an Adventure” as the school theme.

Site Base Decision making members included Kim Major, Erika Stray, Ashton Giles, Brenna Ray and Brey Jones.

The K-PREP Grade comparisons for Proficient/Distinguished are:

Third Grade (3rd) for 2017-18, Reading at 38.4%; and Mathematics at 48.8%.

Fourth Grade (4th) 2017-2018, Reading 60.9%; Mathematics 60.9%; and Science 10.8%; and 2016-2017 (3rd) Reading 52.6%; Mathematics 44.7%; and Science N/A.

Fifth Grade (5th) for 2017-18, Reading 54.4%; Mathematics 33.35%; Social Students 56.2%; and On-Demand 18.8%; 2016-2017, Reading 34.1%; Mathematics 41.5%; Social Studies N/A; and On-Demand N/A; and 2015-2016 (3rd) Reading 53.7%; Mathematics 39%; and Social Studies and On-Demand N/A.

FCES Glows include:

Addition of a fourth preschool classroom; Four Rivers Reading Project, Implementation of Alphabet Step Cards in Preschool – First Grade for phonemic awareness and intervention; Implementation of SRA Early Interventions in Reading in grades K-2; Implementation of a new intervention program using SRA Corrective Reading and SRA Reading Laboratory materials in grades 3 – 4.

PBIS System – Partnership with The Citizens Bank to utilize the positive behavior program through PBIS Rewards.org; and Earned a score of 97% on PBIS fidelity assessment

Continuation of the Leader in Me grant for two years with an elementary focus; Playground renovations to include a playground structure with three slides and a buddy bench made from recycled bottle caps; Two teachers participating in the Kentucky Reading Project; Region 1 Small School Attendance Winner; and Creation of an elementary FPS team.

FCES Grows include:

CSIP (School Improvement Plan) Proficiency Goal – increase the combined (reading and mathematics) percentage of Proficient/Distinguished students from 49.6% to 60.5%; Gap Goal – increase the average combined Reading and Mathematics Proficiency rates for all students n the Gap Group (Consolidated Student Group) from 30.5% to 60.5%; and growth Goal – FCEMS will increase the Reading Growth Rate for combined Reading and Mathematics from 15.6% to 15.8%.

Continue to develop Tier II and III interventions for reading, math, writing and behavior; continue to implement “The Leader in Me” and PBIS programs; Continue to establish and grow positive relationships with parents and community partners to help our students succeed; and Creation of an elementary Quick Recall team to allow for participating in the elementary Governor’s Cup Competition.

FCES is thankful for the continued support and guidance of the Fulton County Board of Education; the support and dedication of our wonderful staff, students, parents, and community; the partnership and support of the Four Rives Foundation; the awesome cafeteria program and staff; the caring and dedicated custodial staff; the committed PTSO and Booster Club; the upcoming renovations that will be done to FCES including new exterior doors, door locks, wiring and exterior siding around the gym; and the same staffing allocations for the 2019-20 school year.

Assistant Superintendent PaTrice Chambers said, “I want to brag on the elementary teachers, as teachers when students come in and they did it, you are all excited. When I come into the building they say look. We do know in order to be successful we have to start with the little ones. I appreciate everything you do.”

The SBDM council expressed gratitude for the new menus in the cafeteria.

Collins stated:

• Three current SBDM’s members involved in the hiring of a new Middle School Principal. I think you did an excellent

• Blessed to have Ms. Gibbs as a Pilot

• Appreciate the relations we continue to build with the community

• The Citizens Bank has been a huge sponsorship of the PBIS and we are very thankful for President Chris Rodgers

• There will be changes in GAP, but that is okay

• Thanks to faculty and staff

• President Carver at UTM will be here in a couple of weeks

Supt. Collins notification of personnel action included the hiring of Carla McClure, Retiree Critical Shortage Preschool Teacher, “she is doing an excellent job”; and Stephanie Moore in Food Service Substitute and classified substitute.

Supt. Collins’ report included:

• Report from Harshaw Trane stating the high school continues to do well with energy savings of $116,000 - $117,000

• Excited about the Board Retreat on Friday.

• Continuing to look at custodial services, building project update including the Career Academy, high school, middle school, and elementary school, as well as, the athletic project

• Athletic positions and salaries

• High school club – Bass Fishing and how it is going

• Update on School Resource Officer

• Mowing services

• Legislative Update

• Surfaces have about run their time. Chromebooks are available for about half the price as the Surfaces

• Adding allotment for Elementary Academic Team

• A donation was received so spouses of Board members will be able to eat with the Board members

Collins stated, “I would like to thank Kim Hagler about a sensitivity training she had at Northwest Tennessee for a Professional Development Day. Hoping we can get it set up for March 15. It will change at how we look at words and how we talk to people. We may be talking to a child and say they are ‘mixed’, that is inappropriate. They are bi-racial.”

The Board approved:

• Allocations for 2019-2020 as the same as last year with average daily enrollment not attendance.

• Graduation date for the Senior of 2019 will be May 31. The school has three days of a threshold before the date may have to be changed.

• Spring Sports Schedules. They are available on the school website

• Use of grounds for Baseball and Softball

• Trip request of National Beta Club trip for two students. Airfare is $216 per person to Oklahoma City, cheaper than driving
