Patsy McCaig of South Fulton still has the sewing machine she purchased for herself her senior year in high school.

She learned the art of sewing during her home economics classes, and recalls the first article of clothing she created from carefully chosen fabric was a skirt.

Fast forward a few decades, after having raised her children and having worked a few jobs in between, and she has now opened her own business, Patsy’s Alterations, etc., at 309 Walnut St. in Fulton.

For years, she carefully pinned, stitched and altered clothing through the South Fulton Cleaners, as well as burned the midnight oil during area prom season, making sure each young lady who came to her sewing room located in her South Fulton home, went home with a perfectly fitted gown, customized just for her, after McCaig worked her magic with the sewing machine, or the delicate hand stitching.

She staged an Open House July 20 at her new shop, with a good turnout of familiar faces as well as new customers, she said during an interview last week.

“Cathy Burrow was the grand door prize winner, of a $25 gift certificate, and then Carolyn Faulkner, Joyce Phillips, Frances Fortner, Cheryl St. John and Annette Lira also won prizes, ranging from a Banana Festival embroidered shirt to a monogrammed t-shirt or sweat shirt, or 50% off purchase of any item in the Etc. portion of the store,” McCaig said.

In addition to extensive alteration services, McCaig customizes beautifully embroidered memory pillows, t-shirt quilts, unique sweat shirts and t-shirts embellished with scarves and trim.

The rear portion of her shop is dedicated to an upscale consignment area, where shoppers may shop for home decor as well as clothing and accessories. She plans to display seasonal items for decorating, and will accept clothing on consignment, which is clean, on hangers, with no rips or tears.

Consignment items will be accepted by appointment only, on Mondays, by calling her cell phone at 731-796-2540, or her home phone at 731-479-3842.

Her regular hours of operation at Patsy’s Alterations, etc., are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and every second and fourth Saturday, she will open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

McCaig also enjoys crafting and has available for purchase a number of items she has created.
