When was the last time you checked whether your house numbers were posted, visible, or all there?

House numbers should be clear enough so that police, fire department, paramedics and other emergency personnel can quickly locate properties in an emergency.

House numbers are often the only way that first responders can identify their intended destinations.

“We will find you in an emergency: we will always find you,” says Hickman Police Chief Tony Grogan. “It might take us five to 10 minutes longer though, and that can have consequences. GPS can locate the area the call came from, but many times not the specific house. We may go to a few houses before we reach the correct one. Having the address clearly posted makes a huge difference in a quick response.”

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been out with a flashlight trying to find the correct house,” added Fulton County Sheriff Derek Goodson.

The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors recommends that home numbers be large, three – six inches in height, and of a color that contrasts with their background.

Further, the numbers should not be obscured by shrubbery, flags, or other permanent objects.

It is also helpful to place the house numbers facing the street that is named in the house’s address. If your home is not visible from the road, display your numbers at the driveway’s entrance.

The Fulton County Young Leaders in Action recommends all residents take a second look at their house numbers.

Can you easily identify your house in both daylight and dark? If your answer is no, please take action to correct the problem. If you need assistance, please contact Hickman City Clerk, Donna Haney.

The Fulton County Young Leaders in Action group is raising money to purchase house numbers for those in need. Please let us know if you need help.
