FIS Young Leaders team receives national honor

Superintendent Dr. DeAnna Miller informed members of the Fulton Indendent Board of Education Aug. 14, during regular board session, that the FIS Young Leaders in Action Team was among the top contestants in the Project Citizen National Showcase.

The group of students’ project had been sent to the National level of competition after winning the state competition, and they eventually scored in the second top category ranking Exceptional in the Showcase.

Nathan Castleman was the team’s leader, with members including Jayden Padilla, Linus Pulley, Patrick Ray and Quentin Cunningham, who presented their project to the board near the end of the previous school year.

Board members Debbie Vaughn, Carol Bransford and Bill Robertson were presented with enrollment information for their review, which reflected a projection of 27 students in Kindergarten, 32 in first grade, 26 in second grade, 29 in third grade, 38 in fourth grade, 36 in fifth grade, 20 in sixth grade, 19 in seventh grade, 18 in eighth grade, 29 in ninth grade, 25 in 10th grade, 22 in 11th grade and 18 in 12th grade for a district total projected at 340.

The personnel report included the transfer of Allie Evans from elementary teacher ot special education teacher and resignations submitted from Michelle Osborne, speech/language pathologist, Jennifer Cothran, elementary teacher, third grade, Seth Frields, Spanish teacher and asst. Academic Coach, Eric Kerney, instructional assistant, preschool bus monitor, Asst. Middle School Girls basketball coach, Taira Fisette, part time custodian, Alexandria Barnett, Assistant High School girls basketball coach and Chris Mason, Asst. football coach.

Appointments listed included Charlotte Goddard, elementary teacher, third grade, Don Bellah, special education teacher, Terra Bryan, speech/language pathologist, Sarah Sparkman, instructional assistant, Judy Hololiman, food service sassistant, Trista Ray, part time custodian, Jana Large, food service sub, Beth Clark, preschool bus monitor, additioanl duty, Angela Smith, Middle Softball head Coach, April Phillips, Assistant MiddleSchool Softball Cloach, Melissa Mora, HIgh School Softball Head Coach, Harold Hutcherson, Head Football Coach, Kenneth Irvine, Assistant Football Coach, Olivia Crawford, classified sub/Americorp, Leighton Thorpe, Daniel Augustus, Asha Jenkins, Madelyne Reynolds and Christie Cavness, Americorp.

The board approved updates to the schools’ A La Carte prices to reflect prices through the new vendor, as recommended by Food Service Director Ashley Teasley. Those prices of items entered through the Smart Snack Calculator, and meeting Kentucky Department of Education requirements include breakfast entrees, $1; lunch entrees, $1; vegetable/fruit, .40; grain, .40; milk, .35; juice, .40; cereal, .50; small water, .30; large water, .50; snacks, chips, rice krispie, etc., .75; snacks, Capri Suns, Cheez Its, etc., $1; snacks, G2, Ice Drinks, etc., $1; and ice cream, $1.

Meal prices for adults for breakfast and lunch will remain the same, at $2.40 and $3.65, respectively.

Dr. Miller recommended the approval of a two year contract with Farr Better Supply, for the 2019-2020 and the 2020-2021 Fulton High School yearbook at the current price on the existing contract as well as the approval of the bid with Memory Book/Jostens for the Carr Elementary School Yearbook for 2018-19.

The board agreed with the recommendation and approved both contracts.

Fundraisers were approved for the Boys Basketball program, to conduct a fish fry Aug. 18; Girls Basketball program for a Wendy’s Give Back 20% fundraiser; Cheerleaders, for a t-shirt sales project; Baseball/Middle School Girls Basketball, for soft drink sales; Baseball/Middle School Girls Basketball for a Yard Sign/Spirit Sign sales project; the FISPA Booster Club for a sale of Boston Butts and Ribs, as well as a Patron of the Arts Sponsorship Drive.

A Special Called meeting was set for Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m., to replace the regular meeting date of Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m., in order to allow for the determination of the tax rate, with board members present approving the special called session and cancellation of the regular meeting.

Board member Sam Hancock was absent from the meeting. Board member Daniel Zickefoose has resigned from his position on the board.
