AREA OBITUARIES - CLAIRE MABRY HOLLAND

Claire Mabry Holland, 95, of Brentwood, Tenn., formerly of Hickman, died peacefully in her sleep on June 8, 2023, in Nashville, Tenn. She was the daughter of Charles Poindexter Mabry and Nell Bondurant Mabry of Hickman, Ky.

After graduating from Hickman High School, she attended Christian College, Columbia, Mo., 1945-46, then the University of Kentucky, graduating in January 1949 with a BS in Home Economics Education. While at UK she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta social sorority and honor societies Phi Upsilon Omicron & Kappa Delta Pi. After graduation she worked as a teacher at Western School near Hickman and then in Paducah at Union Carbide.

Claire married 1LT David K Holland on Oct. 30, 1954, in Hickman, Ky., becoming a “Career Army Wife” and homemaker. The couple had many Army tours in the USA, Europe and Caribbean; two tours - Iran and Vietnam - she stayed in the US with the children. While stationed in the Washington, DC area, Claire was President of the Federated Women’s Club of Pine Ridge, Va.; and while at Ft. Monroe, Va., she served as President of the Armed Forces Officer’s Wives’ Club. Later she served as President of the Huguenot Society FMCV; Regent of the Campbell Chapter DAR; and an officer in both the Colonial Dames XVII Century and Magna Charta Dames. Claire was a member of the First Christian Church of Hickman and a longtime member of Community Bible Church, Brentwood.

She is predeceased by her husband, Col. David K. Holland USA (Retired) and one grandson, David K. (Trey) Holland, III.

Claire is survived by her two children, David (Jennifer) K. Holland Jr. of Arbuckle, Calif., and Nancy N. Holland of Frederick, Md.; grandchildren, Melanie K. (Brandon) Lundt of Webster Groves, Mo., and John E. (Sally) Holland of Maplewood, Mo.; one great-granddaughter, Lydia Lucy Iocca Holland, Maplewood; one sister, Joyce M. (John) Anderson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held at Community Bible Church, Brentwood, June 10, 2023, with Pastors Jeremy Litts and Vince Greer officiating.

A funeral service was held June 13, 2023, at the First Christian Church of Hickman (arrangements by Hornbeak Funeral Home, Fulton, Ky.) with burial following at The Hickman City Cemetery with Steve Coulson of First Christian Church of Hickman officiating.

Active pallbearers included John Holland, Forrest Anderson, Anthony Williams, Austin Goodman, Jacob Goodman and Barry Cardwell. Honorary pallbearers were Scott Anderson, David B. Holland, Jim Holland, Col. (Ret.) Andrew McVeigh, Milus Wallace, Garland Williams and Walter Goodman.

Claire loved the Lord, establishing, with her husband, many scholarships at Bible Colleges and Seminaries. She enjoyed her family and many friends, bible study, reading, travel, genealogy and bridge.
