KY 129/East State Line Road Reopened at Bridge Immediately East of Cleveland Ave in Fulton

October 24, 2023

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has reopened a section of KY 129/East State Line Road in the City of Fulton.

KY 129/East State Line Road had been closed since June 8, at mile point 0.65 after an inspection team reported a number of structural issues with an older timber pile bridge over an unnamed tributary to Harris Fork Creek immediately east of the Cleveland Avenue intersection.

The inspection team found a tie rod on the box beam bridge had failed, causing beams to move and flex when trucks crossed the structure. Repairs were completed in a few weeks to allow the bridge to reopen. However, as engineers were observing the bridge several heavily loaded trucks crossed the structure causing beams to flex and move, indicating there was still a problem.

The bridge was closed a second time. Engineers determined that the bridge should be reconstructed. The reconstruction process started this month when materials arrived at the site. The work is completed, and the new bridge reopened to traffic at 9 a.m., today.

The KYTC District 1 Bridge Crew constructed the new bridge, with assistance from Jim Smith Contracting and the Fulton County Jail Work Release Crew.

All bridges get a detailed inspection every two years with long-span river and lake bridges getting an extra walk-through inspection annually. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is responsible for inspecting all bridges on public roadways in the Commonwealth.

A photo of the new bridge should be posted shortly at www.Facebook.com/KYTCDistrict 1.
