Fulton’s insurance premium tax set

by Benita Fuzzell

Fulton Mayor David Prater, Commissioners Martha Vowell, Elaine Forrester and Jeff Vaughn heard and approved the second and final reading of Ordinance 2019-03 to implement a 3% insurance premium tax for city residents, including insurance policies covering home, auto, recreational vehicles, health and a one time life insurance tax, during special called session March 14. The ordinance takes effect upon publication in this week’s edition of The Current, with the ordinance published in its entirety on page 8A.

According to City Manager Mike Gunn, it could take up to a year before the revenue generated from the implemented tax finds its way back to the city.

Another ordinance, Ordinance 2019-04, was given a first reading, this one to increase water and sewer rates for the city and water district.

That ordinance will require a second reading, scheduled for the next regular session of the commission March 25, and publication March 27, to take effect April 1, on the May billing cycle.

As proposed in the ordinance, the first 3000 gallons of water for customers inside the city would be established at $21.54 minimum, and proportionately for the next 5,000, 7,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 200,000 and over 200,000 increments.

Rates for water service per gallon for the Southwestern Kentucky Water District would be $51.59, minimum, for 3,000 gallons, and then incrementally increased at 8,000, 13,000, 20,000, 30,000 and over 30,000 gallons accordingly.

Likewise, sewer rates would be $32.30 minimum, for the first 3,000 gallons for city customers, and increases incrementally.

Commissioner Darcy Linn was absent from the meeting.
