IRENE AMOS

Irene Amos, a resident of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died Sept. 1 at Ratliff Care Center, in Cape Girardeau. She was 96.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel, in Cape Girardeau, with Pastor Gerald Collier officiating. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the hour of service. Burial followed in St James United Church of Christ Cemetery in Tilsit, Mo. Ford & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by her sister, Mildred Amos Hoxie, of Arlington, Va.; a niece, Margaret (Deen) Hoxie Kaplan, and their sons Joshua and Jonathan, of McLean, Va.; a great niece, Wendi (Steve) Aldridge Nipp, of Oakland, Tenn., and their children, Jennifer (John) Nipp Crowley, and daughter, Madeline of Madison, Ala., and Ricky Nipp, of South Fulton; and several cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin Fred and Mary Celia Meier Amos; brother, Norman (Opal) Amos; brother-in-law, Frank Hoxie; and niece, Ruth Ann (Richard) Amos Aldridge.

Born March 23, 1923 in Gordonville, Mo., she moved to St. Louis in 1944 to complete nurse’s training at City Hospital. She served as a registered nurse at City Hospital for 41 years.

She was deeply involved in her church, Trinity United Church of Christ, and loved to bake and play pinochle and games with her family and friends.

In 1985, she retired to Cape Girardeau. She was an active member of Evangelical United Church of Christ and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

She spent her life thinking of, encouraging and serving others.
