Lee sees potential from Lady Devils’ work ethic

The 2019-2020 Lady Red Devils basketball program is underway, as they opened up their season with Gibson County Nov. 19.

The Lady Red Devils have a total of nine players on the team, two of which are new players, Halle Gore and Makenna Naugle.

Head Coach, Curt Lee, said, “They are young. Hopefully Naugle can bring a little more defense to the team and Gore can bring some control play.”

When asked about the starting five Coach Lee said, “Starters change daily, but as of now our three seniors, Sophia McMinn, Allison Murphy, and Nece Quinn, along with Sophia Hodges, and McClerkin will be the starters due to what we are doing defensively and having to play a lot of zone.”

Coach Lee was asked about his limited bench, and he said, “Kailey Mayo will be one of the first off the bench as she adds a little length. Gore and Naugle can come in to add some defense, and Aaliyah McKnight comes in to add some more athletic ability.

Coach Lee views his three seniors as emerging team leaders as they “are trying to do things and practice harder each day.”

According to Coach Lee, the biggest assets and biggest challenges to the Lady Red Devils is “they are all hard workers and play together well. Scoring is going to be our deficiency. We are going to have to find some to step up and put the ball in the hoop on a consistent basis.”

Coach Lee’s goal for this season is to “be in the top four spots of the district.” Looking ahead at the schedule, the Lady Red Devils have many tough opponents but “Greenfield is bringing back a good group from the state tournament last year, Gleason and Dresden are also returning their main core, and Union City is a very athletic group.”
