Hickman County Elementary Principal provides updates on NTI materials

(Editor’s Note: The following was submitted by Richard Todd, Hickman County Elementary School Principal)
I’ve always been honest with you, so when I write this, you’ll know I mean it: I am not a fan of NTI, nor are the teachers and staff at HCES. We miss the kids.
However, NTI is necessary at this time due to the COVID-19 virus. Our staff has worked hard to do the best we can during this time to continue educating your child. We know, too, that you are working hard to do the same, and we have been impressed with the completion of assignments from our students. Documentation from the teachers shows that more than 90 percent of our students are completing their work. That is a tremendous achievement – and one that we need to continue – that is largely attributable to parents and others helping and encouraging our students.
We will have another day of drop-off of completed student work at HCES April 24. We will staff it at the same site, which is the gym concession stand area from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Students and parents will receive mid-term reports that same day, and we will also give you information regarding our HCES site-based election for parent representatives. Those will be conducted mostly via electronic methods this year.
Simultaneously, we will be providing NTI assignments for weeks 6 and 7 on April 24 as well. As we approach the end of the school year, teachers will be sending more fun end-of-year activities for your child rather than assignments on paper. Please do your best with these, as we are often looking for some creativity and good effort, not perfection.
To give you an example of such a creative effort, I’ve attached above a photo of a writing assignment completed by one of our first grade students, Corbin Williams. It reads as follows:
“Super Corbin Saves the Town” In a small town called Clinton there was a thing called the Corona Virus. It was making lots of people sick and closing down restaurants, and stores and everything. People had to stay at their houses and not go to the best school in the universe. One day, this little boy named Corbin turned into *SUPER CORBIN* because God wanted him to save his town. So Corbin asked God how to make everyone better. He told him to team up with all doctors and nurses and that God would heal all the sick people. Super Corbin had one special weapon, his super Sanitizer Blaster, so he flew up in sky and shot it all over the town. This sent the Corona Virus to Mars so Super Corbin saved the town. The End
Parents, thanks again for all you do supporting both your child and our school during this time. Please help your child get all assignments completed and turned in. These assignments matter, and we are taking grades on them.
