South Fulton Parks Board to pursue brick fundraiser

If given final approval by the South Fulton City Commission, the South Fulton Parks and Rec board will initiate a fundraising effort which could assist the board in coordinating ongoing community events in the city, such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, and Christmas in the Park.

Meeting in regular session Aug. 7 at 5 p.m. in the Harvey Vick Community Room of the South Fulton Municipal Complex, board chair Felicia Lightner, board members Myra Bass, Billy Williams and Anita Murphy heard from Parks Supervisor David McDaniel, who updated the group on a fundraising idea to sell engraved bricks.

McDaniel said he was going to pursue the possibility of the city’s work crews performing some of the labor required to use the engraved bricks to form a decorative walkway, and possibly add a bench, pergola and sign to the area of the brick walkway.

The bricks would allow for three lines of engraving, 13 characters each line, at a cost of $40 per brick of three bricks for $100.

He said he would have to solicit an electrician to perform some of the work required.

The board agreed setting up a display during the upcoming Banana Festival could be an opportunity for the public to order and purchase the bricks, once approved by the Commission.

In other business, McDaniel reported the date for the Trunk or Treat Halloween event in Unity Park would be Oct. 27, from 5-7 p.m.

A discussion was held in regard to a proposed budget figure, and ultimate request for funding the Trunk or Treat event, the Community Easter Egg Hunt and an event during the Christmas season, in the amount of $5100 for the three events, wherein the city provides food and candy, as well as some prizes and additional Christmas decorations for the Municipal Complex and Unity Park areas.

As a result of the recent resignation of Kevin Burden from the Parks and Rec Board, the board proposed to recommend Eddie Cassetty as his replacement, with the recommendation to be presented for consideration by the full South Fulton City Commission.

Board members Harry Hutcherson and Barbie Hardy were absent.
