Hands on skills taught, learned at home by FIS students recently
(Editor’s Note: The following was submitted by Amie Huff, Family Consumer Sciences Teacher at Fulton Independent Schools)
Learning and teaching has been different for us all this year. As a parent, myself, I have learned to embrace my time at home with my family. So, what better way to teach my students real world life skills than having them do them at home. Cleaning out the refrigerator, reading to children, washing dishes, play a game as a family, interview an elder in the family, and baking and decorating a cake are just a few examples of assignments. Needless to say, I had some very thankful parents.
They were given a choice board of a variety of assignments, they were to complete the assignment by taking before and after pictures, and then write a short paper about what they learned or would had done different.
As a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, I found it significant for my students to do assignments like this so they can experience hands on and learn these life skills. They were able to see the connection of core subjects to everyday skills. For instance, as in baking a cake: the math in measuring, the science of it rising, and language arts to read the recipe. It is important for my students to know and learn these life skills in an ever-changing world.
