FMS teacher, UK Extension Agent “cook up” lessons

December 02, 2020

During virtual learning, Fulton Middle School math teacher Daniel Farmer noticed his students participate more in Zoom sessions when they have time to “hang out” and just talk to each other. “It’s hard on them, not getting to see each other,” said Farmer. “As their teacher, I’m as concerned about their social growth and happiness as I am about algebra.”

Farmer reached out to UK Extension agent Anna McCoy to ask if she’d lead a cooking lesson with the middle schoolers. She said yes right away; together they decided on apple nachos.

The virtual cooking lesson took place Nov. 23 after FRYSC coordinator Tracy Pulley delivered ingredients to students’ homes. 11 students participated and had a great time creating their Thanksgiving snacks.

Seventh grader Zuzu Pulley said the dip was delicious; sixth grader Gabe Zalucki said he would eat more apples from now on.

Farmer made sure students paid attention to the math side of things as they measured and prepped.

Farmer hopes to host a Christmas virtual cooking lesson in December, continuing to sneak in math with the fun.
