REELFOOT LAKE DOUBLE MURDER SUSPECT'S BODY RECOVERED FROM LAKE

February 01, 2021

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced the body of David Vowell has been recovered in the waters of Reelfoot Lake, on Saturday.

TBI said Vowell was located around 3 p.m., on Saturday, near the area of the incident where he is accused of killing two duck hunters Jan. 25.

TBI officials said his identity has been confirmed and an autopsy will be performed.

The incident involving Vowell, 70, of Martin, Tenn., took place on the northern end of Reelfoot Lake, and resulted in the shooting deaths of Chance Black, 25 and Zackary Grooms, 26, both of Greenfield, Tenn.

A third man, Jeff Crabtree, was hunting with Black and Grooms that day, and was not injured, however, according to District Attorney General Tommy Thomas, Crabtree "did what he could to thwart Mr. Vowell and certainly saved his own life" and Crabtree was not a suspect in the shooting.

Crabtree was able to take the gun away from Vowell when Vowell approached the blind in which Black, Grooms and Crabtree were hunting, but not before Vowell shot Black and Grooms. Crabtree was able to transport the two injured men by boat to the shore to seek medical attention.
