Ruth (Armbruster) Holland, a resident of Warren, Mich., died April 17. She was 93.

Funeral services will be held on April 24 at Strong Funeral Home, in Hickman, at 2 p.m. Steve Coulson will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the Hickman City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until the hour of service.

She is survived by her sister, Genevieve (Chuck) Bugay; sister-in-law, Claire Mabry Holland; children, David (Ruth) Holland, Terry (Diane) Holland, James Holland, Jean Holland; a son-in-law, Dan (Elizabeth) Urra; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Homer Armbruster; her husband, Joseph B. Holland, who she married on Feb. 6, 1947 in Hickman; a daughter, Virginia; and brother-in-law, Colonel David Holland.

Born Aug. 23, 1927 in Hickman, she grew up in Detroit, Mich., and was a proud graduate of Cass Tech High School.

As their family grew they moved to Detroit, and then to Warren, where she completed a BFA in English and a Masters of Education from Wayne State University. She taught at Elizabeth Little Elementary School in Warren, for 25 years. After she retired she worked in a bookstore to satisfy her love of reading.

She took up quilting in her 40’s when her oldest son was serving in the Navy. It became a lifelong passion and source of beautiful artistic expression.

It helped sustain her during her fight with breast cancer and she hand sewed over 500 quilts, loving to gift them to family, friends, and charitable organizations.

She always made time for a daily crossword puzzle, never missed an episode of Jeopardy, and followed the Detroit Tigers and Lions.

She was a loving mother who will be missed by many for her wit, determination resilience, and creativity.
