South Fulton City Hall is currently in the process of forwarding utility deposit refunds owed to former residents and utilities customers, from years past.

According to South Fulton City Recorder Jackie Potter, the city's auditors have recommended the city take the necessary steps to locate former utility customers who are no longer serviced by the city, but currently have deposits still in the system which were never refunded to them.

"We are making every attempt to clean up the accounts in our system. If someone has moved or passed away and no one left us an address to forward anything to, it's hard to track the person, or in the case of the former utility customer now being deceased, it is hard to locate family members," Potter said.

Potter noted some residents may receive the deposit refund check at their address, however the addressee no longer resides as the location.

In that case, Potter suggests the current resident may mark the envelope as the addressee no longer resides there, or the refund may be dropped off at South Fulton City Hall.

"We are sending the checks out in hopes the post office puts a sticker on it to let us know if there is another address to send it to or not," Potter said, adding the state of Tennessee is also recommending mailing the refund for the deposit first, to the last known address of the customer, as an attempt to locate them.

"We are not asking the current residents who have received a check for a prior customer to look for that person. They can just write on the envelope that the person whose name appeared on the envelope no longer lives there, and put it back in their mailbox. Once we attempt to locate the person owed the refund that way, we then have other methods we will have to use to locate them," Potter said.
