‘Mock wreck’ staged to prevent real tragedies

by Barbara Atwill

A “mock wreck” was staged April 1, at Fulton County High School’s Sanger Field, to typify a situation involving teens drinking and driving during prom, for the entire high school student body.

FCHS Ag teacher, Arianne Allen, worked diligently with the students for many hours to formulate scripts and last minute moulage.

Brandon Uzzle, Fulton County Schools Family Resource Youth Service Center (FRYSC) Coordinator also helped with the behind the scenes logistics.

The synopsis involved a student driver thinking she was able to drive safely after consuming an “alcohol” beverage, but who hit another car head on.

In the staged scenario, one passenger from one car was thrown through the windshield and died on scene.

A passenger in the second car involved stopped breathing and following attempts to revive her, also died on the scene.

The Sheriff’s department arrived and initiated a field sobriety test on the impaired driver, then placed her in the back of the police car to take her to the station, to be arrested.

Fulton County Fire and Rescue cut the top off of one vehicle to remove a passenger, who was later airlifted to a hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the wreck.

Hickman Chief of Police Tony Grogan inspected the two vehicles and gathered information for his report.

Assisting with the “mock wreck” were FCHS students and their parents, Fulton County Fire and Rescue, Hickman Police Department, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Fulton County Emergency Management, KenTenn EMS, Fulton County Coroner Matt Moss, Air Evac Lifeteam 31 of Martin, Tenn, Chris Bradshaw, who narrated the event, Fulton County Dispatcher Robert Griggs, Allen’s Towing and Recovery, which provided and transported wrecked vehicles, Dave Thomas for video coverage, and Barbara Atwill, media coverage for The Current newspaper.
